A Growing Younger Case Study. Meet Terry, a 67 year old business owner who was literally staring down the barrel of a heart attack, but managed to improve all areas of his health & fitness to become biologically younger. He faced the same struggles as we all do, around time and injuries, but the Growing Younger Programme literally changed his life.
You see, Although the aging process is hard-wired into our body and cannot be stopped this doesn’t mean that we are completely at its mercy..
We can dramatically, influence how quickly or how well we age. The foods we eat, the activities in which we choose to do, and environmental toxins to which we are exposed, have been shown to either “accelerate” or “slow” the aging process.

When Terry came into the gym, he was carrying a lot of his weight around his middle. I could tell immediately that his visceral fat was high. But It wasn’t until he stood on my Tanita Scales (an Impedance device) I realised the seriousness of it all.
Compared to ‘normal’ fat, visceral fat is stored deeper in the skin. Visceral fat is wrapped around major organs like the liver, pancreas and your kidney. Visceral fat ensures that there is some distance between each organ. Too much visceral fat creates can lead to inflammation and high blood pressure (which he had), which increases the risk of serious health problems.
The Tanita body composition analyser can track visceral fat in your body. Based on all the available information it gives you a range between 1 and 59. A rating between 1 and 12 indicates that you have a healthy level of visceral fat. A rating between 13 and 59 indicates that you have an excessive level of visceral fat.
Terry was sitting at 32. This was the highest I had ever seen.
After discussing things with Terry, it became apparent that his Doctor had asked him to start an exercise programme but like a lot of people Terry’s age he literally had no idea where to start.
What made it harder was that he had a lot of joint issues such as arthritis in the knees, which lead to a loss of strength in his legs.
As we get older, we lose a lot of muscle conditioning and muscle power in the lower body, power. Now this is really important to know because it will get to a point where we literally won’t be able to get up off a chair and puts us at serious risk of a fall.
Terry’s sore knees made it even more difficult and this contributed to loss of muscle and strength.
This loss of muscle, throughout his legs and body, contributed to him having a slow metabolism and this means he was more likely to store bodyfat. So he was really desperate for a solution.
So after a thorough assessment, I was able to design a training programme and nutritional solution for him, and for his unique set of circumstances.
There are very few Trainers in the local area of Howick and Pakuranga and even Auckland who specialise in the older demographic, with the issues that so many older people face.
So this was extremely important to get right, because if it wasn’t, Terry would be in more pain than what he was already in and even cause more harm than good.
After just 66 workouts literally got life changing results.
Lean Body Mass – Increased from 64kg – 69kg. By adding more lean muscle he has literally super charged his metabolism to help him burn more fat at rest.
Waist – Terry’s waist from 123 cms – 112 cm, significantly reducing his visceral fat from 32 – 22. A huge difference.
Body Weight – Terry reduced his body weight from 117kg to 103kg atthe time of writing this case study.

“So there I was 67 years old, 117 kgs+, minor heart condition and blood pressure medication, hadn’t trained or done any formal exercise in 20 years and decided it was time to do something about it if I wanted to enjoy life for a lot longer.
Down to the gym in my neighbourhood, joined up, then what?
Gavyn’s photo was on the board as the endorsed trainer so made contact and that was the single best move I have made in many a year.What followed was a full assessment with Gavyn and associate Physiotherapist Alex to ensure all was well to train and to have the programme designed for me especially.
After those initial consultations, a training programme was established and, even more importantly Gavyn introduced me to a nutrition control system, something I had never seen or considered before.
It was not a diet as such, more a knowledge tool and self-administered food regime at a preset (and regularly reviewed) daily calorie rate.
It is fun actually and I still eat the same types of food as I always have, with a few deletions and reductions of my choice. It has not been a hardship and has become the norm as opposed to a “grind”.
So, with all this installed and regular reviews of training, body and fitness and nutrition statistics away we went working towards a goal.
That was 4 months prior to the writing of this note.
I now weigh 104.5 kgs, my biological statistics have improved dramatically, both my doctor and cardiologist are thrilled with the progress (so is Gavyn, he get’s genuine pleasure from his trainees doing well). We are half way to my 90kg goal and I know with Gavyn’s support I can make it.
It really just takes commitment and following Gavyn’s advice.
So, I can say now that Gavyn has been the catalyst to a major turnaround in my lifestyle and wellbeing.
